Recursive Memory is a series of fifteen works by Harto, released in November 2025 with the Museum of Art + Light (MoA+L) and Iconic as part of the museum’s Permanent Collection Series. Each work is a Bitcoin Ordinal paired with a hand-embellished print.
A further 1/1 edition, in print and Ordinal, will enter the museum’s permanent collection.
The release describes work made between code, machine and hand. Memory is treated as something that is copied, layered and reinterpreted, and the work asks who the author is when several processes have a hand in the result.
In the words of the release, Recursive Memory steps into the in-between, at a time when machines generate images faster than we can feel them.
The work moves through six recursive steps. The first is p5.js code that generates an image. A pen plotter then draws it on paper, and Harto intervenes by hand with oils and acrylics. An AI analyses and annotates the result, the artist answers the machine’s suggestions, and the final layered composition comes out of that exchange.
The prints are signed and numbered on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper and measure 65 × 85 cm.
The parent inscription, titled Recursive Memory, carries the series metadata. Its children are HTML certificates of authenticity, one for each of the fifteen editions, and each one shows the artwork, the series text and the partner marks, with the image itself held in a separate inscription.
The parent was inscribed on 13 November 2025, and the editions on 17 to 19 November 2025.
